Sugi is a brand by Mr. Sugimoto, a legend who has supported Japanese guitar making for many years.
Based in Nagano Prefecture, it manufactures high-quality guitars and basses, highly regarded by many musicians.
Its basses are known for being favored by musicians like Hojin Egawa and Mike Porcaro of TOTO.
This model is Sugi's flagship NB5.
The body is Ash, the fingerboard is Maple—a classic combination.
While Sugi often uses flashy exotic woods for tops, this model features a simpler specification.
The neck is a 3-piece laminated Maple type.
This technique of laminating multiple pieces of wood reduces lateral imbalance and individual variations, achieving greater stability.
The hardware uses GOTOH components, but these are Sugi's original custom-made parts, optimized specifically for this bass.
Despite having 24 frets, it produces a sound that feels open without being overly tight.
This characteristic seems to positively influence both fingerstyle and slap playing.
Approximately 80% of the frets remain.
The truss rod is stiff but confirmed to move about 90 degrees.
The neck shows a slight twist with a tendency to bow away from the 5-string side. However, the string height at the 12th fret is adjusted to 2.0mm on the G string and 2.8mm on the B string, making it perfectly playable.
The body and finish show scattered dents and scratches.
The electronics are in good condition.
No significant modifications were noted.
