Description & Condition
Pensa Custom Guitars (Pensa) is known as the private brand of Rudy's, a famous store in New York City.
It was formerly known as Pensa Suhr Custom.
Rudy's has produced many great builders, including John Suhr, Stephen Marchione, Mas Hino, and Jimmy Coppolo (titles omitted), all of whom worked at Rudy's.
Top musicians such as Nathan East, Richard Bona, Victor Bailey, and John Mayer were well-known customers of Rudy's and patronized the private label Pensa.
Rudy's, with such top musicians in the New York area as its customers, has been constantly updating Pensa's products.
This fretless model is reminiscent of Victor Bailey.
In fact, he uses a Pensa bass, and it is the Pensa he is holding on the cover of his solo album called Bottom's Up.
That Pensa had a koa body, so his signature model released later by Fender also has a koa body.
Going back to this model, the body is probably koa.
It is a fretless model with an ebony fingerboard and coated.
It looks a bit like the Pensa he used, including the black knobs.
It's very austere.
The controls are a little different, with three volumes.
The breakdown is: neck PU and bridge PU, each individually, and a master that controls them all together.
In addition, the passive tone has a push-pull switch that, when pulled, bypasses the treble of the active EQ set in the cavity.
With it pushed, it's like having a preset treble.
You can also do it the other way around, as there is a preference for the usability of this.
The sound is coated fretless-like and includes powerful trebly nuances over a generous low end.
It feels Jaco-like, but with a stronger midrange, and in some ways it's like a vintage Fender. (In other words, it's very good.)
Recommendation.
The truss rod works and the neck is in good condition.
The body and paintwork are in good condition, with a large scratch on the body back.
Some areas are shiny from being played.
The instrument has a good aura, as if it has been played.
The electrical system is in good condition.
No clear modification points were found.
