Phil Jones Bass is one of the most pure and unadorned sounding bass amp brands available.
Their high-quality products are trusted by many professionals and used on stage by top musicians such as Bobby Vega, Pino Palladino, Nathan East, and Tony Levin.
This is an ultra-serious compressor.
What makes it unique is that it divides the signal into low and high frequencies, and then allows you to adjust and mix the ratio, threshold, attack, and release of each.
While it is becoming a standard practice to release only the low frequencies or to mix the original sound, this is probably the first time such a technique has been used in an effects pedal.
(EBS Multicomp has a Multi Band setting, but probably no one uses it. .......)
Each band operates as a separate compressor and can be turned on and off independently.
This allows for operations that were previously impossible, such as "I want to apply it only to the high frequencies when slapping," or "I want the low frequencies to sound cohesive and the high frequencies to sing freely.
There is a Send/Return terminal, which is also in each band.
It is possible to distort only the high frequencies, or EQ only the low frequencies.
In other words, it can function as a highly functional mixer. Amazing.
Once compression is set for each band, the three knobs determine how much compression is applied.
PARALLEL is for mixing with the original sound, LO/HI MIX is for the balance of each band, and X/O FREQUENCY is for the frequency at which the bands are separated. Amazing.
As for the style of operation, this is a VCA.
It is characterized by a speedy sound. dbx 160 is a VA type.
It is not the type that adds warmth or character.
In fact, that is not what we are looking for in a PJB. If you are looking for that, EBS Multicomp or Origin Cali 76 would probably fit the bill.
Personally, I think the great thing about PJB products is that they are able to create sounds with quantitative numbers and evidence.
While it is of course good to have a product that is finished with a certain sense of style, sound creation using PJB products is reproducible.
Because it is possible to create a sound with a basis, it works in any situation.
Products like the HAO BASSLINER and the X4 are really great, but this new product is impeccable.
This is the perfect unit for bassists who like to do things logically.
Highly recommended.
