Description & Condition
De Gier is a Dutch brand founded by Sander De Gier in 1996.
Originally, he focused on making unique, modern bass guitars, but now he primarily produces products emphasizing the Fender style.
The brand was originally highly acclaimed, but since releasing the BeBop, a JB-style model, its sheer excellence has left him fully occupied with that work.
Currently, in addition to Fender-style guitars, the lineup also includes unique models incorporating Gibson style.
I first encountered De Gier at the Guitar Summit held in Germany in 2022.
At first glance, I was intrigued by its appearance, and the moment I plucked the strings, that belief became a conviction.
The quality was so overwhelming that I began negotiations.
At first, sales in Japan were difficult for various reasons, but after persistent negotiations, we are now able to begin sales. (It was so amazing that I absolutely had to introduce it to Japanese musicians, so I persisted.)
Many other brands were exhibiting at Guitar Summit, and I spoke with a variety of builders.
De Gier came up several times, and their skills seemed to be widely known.
Several builders even said they had ordered basses from De Gier for themselves.
That's how highly acclaimed the brand is in Europe and the United States.
And I personally hold them in the highest regard as well.
This model is their specialty, the highly acclaimed Fender-style bass bass.
As this is a Classic model, it has several traditional changes from the standard model.
The body is made of alder and the fingerboard is made of rosewood, a classic combination.
The fingerboard is round-laminated.
One concern with passive 5-string basses is that they can have an open texture and weak high-frequency response.
This model addresses this issue by increasing the proportion of maple to achieve a clearer tone.
Compared to the standard model, this model's design is clearly focused on a more 4-string feel and vintage style.
The neck is beautiful, straight-grained maple.
The standard Soulmate has a carbon reinforcement to correct neck distortion, but the Classic model does not.
This gives it the traditional feel of a vintage Fender.
While it has the disadvantage of not being able to achieve an extremely low action, it is a clear advantage for those who prefer a different setup or are looking for a Fender-style 5-string bass.
Another notable feature is that the headstock is thinner than the standard model.
If you actually measure the headstock thickness of a vintage Fender, it is thinner than current models and brands with modern specifications.
It goes without saying that the serious attitude of in-depth research into instruments, which distinguishes the standard model down to the smallest details, contributes to the compelling final sound.
Both the bridge and tuning machines are made by GOTOH.
The bridge is a classic spiral style.
The tuning machines are RES-O-LITE, a lightweight choice with a relatively vintage feel.
The pickups are Lindy Fralin.
It's built with a simple passive circuit consisting of volume and tone controls.
The potentiometers are CTS, and the electrical components, such as the wiring, are also vintage-style.
The color is Fiesta Red.
The paint is nitrocellulose lacquer with a relic finish.
The beautiful atmosphere created by this color and relic finish is one of De Gier's hallmarks.
The quality is truly high.
The sound is fresh and bouncy, with ample bass, rich mids, and juicy treble.
It meets the range required for a bass in an ensemble and is a sound that will strike a chord with any bassist.
Although it is a 5-string bass, the 3rd and 4th strings have an endlessly open nuance, while the 1st and 2nd strings retain their delicious mid-range.
It has beautiful character from low to high, without any negative aspects.
The articulation of the low B and the appealing treble nuances are also appealing, and not many bass builders can create basses like this.
This is what we've been searching for in a Fender-style 5-string.
We guarantee you'll be impressed.
