Cortex is a guitar brand based in Switzerland and France.

They primarily manufacture basses, and their reputation was frequently heard, especially in Europe.

In 2024, when I visited the Guitar Summit in Germany, I spoke with the Cortex craftsman himself, who was exhibiting at the guitar show.

He is a craftsman purely dedicated to creating beautiful and musical basses, and I was impressed by the extremely high quality of his work, which led to the start of this business relationship.

Geek IN Box is now officially recognized as a dealer of Cortex Basses in Japan.

And the bass that sealed the deal for this business relationship is this Napoleon Deluxe 5 Fretless.

When I first touched it, I was captivated by its smooth playability, rich string vibration, quick response, and organic, beautiful sound.

I felt it was the best fretless bass I had ever played, and that was the basis for my decision to start a business relationship with Cortex.

This Napoleon model features a modern double-cutaway body, with a sufficiently long bass-side horn providing overall balance.

While it has a different concept from Fender-style guitars, it should feel familiar to those who have played Fenders for a long time.

This is a 5-string fretless model, and it is said to be the world's first Napoleon with this specification.

The body features a spalted maple top and walnut back.

The neck and fingerboard are made of exquisite flame maple, and the fingerboard is coated with epoxy.

The body top and neck are painted in a beautiful see-through blue, and the natural texture of the walnut contrasts beautifully with the lustrous maple fingerboard, resulting in a distinctive look.

It may be a simple comparison, but these details evoke a distinctly European feel.

The fingerboard radius is a 10.5-26" compound radius. This technique of flattening the fingerboard radius from the lower frets to the higher frets is a specialty of guitars like Suhr Guitars and is known to be very useful in maintaining high playability throughout the instrument.

The nut width is 45mm, giving the neck a slim feel.

The neck thickness is also thin at 20.5mm (nut) - 22mm (12th fret).

The neck has a very slim feel due to its reduced mass, which I believe has a positive impact on the sound.

The pickups are Delano Times Square SBC5TF, and the preamp is a GLOCKENKLANG 2-band EQ type.

Controls include volume (push/pull switch, preamp bypass), bass, treble (TONE), and single-coil/double-coil switch.

The tuners are GOTOH, and the bridge is a CORTEX original.

The playability is very smooth, and the sound has ample low frequencies, rich mid-range, and high frequencies with rich harmonics.

In a way, it's like the best Fender JB; in another way, it's like a robust Fodera.

If you play it, I'm sure you'll share the same feeling of awe I experienced.
