Description & Condition
J.W. Black is a former Fender master builder who has continued to build great guitars and basses since becoming independent.
He started his career in the 70's, and after working for Sadowsky, Rudy's, and Fender, and repairing vintage guitars as an individual (he worked on guitars for Frank Zappa, Eric Clapton, and others), he launched his own eponymous brand.
This model is based on his concept, but manufactured in Japan to keep the price low.
The body is made of alder and the fingerboard is rosewood in a classic configuration.
It is unique in that it is inspired by vintage style basses, but has modern elements.
Various modifications have been made by the previous owner.
The bridge was replaced with Freedom Custom Guitar Research / SP-BB-03 Tone Shift Bass Bridge Ver. 3.0.
Neck set plate was replaced with Freedom Custom Guitar Research / Tone Shift Plate SP-JP-03.
Replaced the strap pins with Jim Dunlop strap pins.
ESP pickup fence was added.
I still have the impression that the sound is a little more modern.
Still, it has a nice balance of the low-frequency strength and warm vintage feeling.
This is a gem that is packed with the royal elements of jazz bass, yet has a high playability and hot sound suitable for modern musicians.
The frets are approximately 80% remaining.
The truss rod is in good working order.
The neck is in good condition.
The body and paintwork are in good condition, with a few scattered scratches and a few mm of dings. There is a 5mm mark burned by something near the jack.
The electrical system is in good condition.
