Description & Condition
musicman" emerged as Leo Fender's second brand and was loved by bassists around the world.
After being acquired by Ernieball, that has not changed, and the company is still widely accepted by modern bassists.
Many artists, including Lewis Johnson and Flea, are known to use the company's basses.
The Stingray is the brand's overwhelmingly popular standard model.
It is no exaggeration to say that it is one of the most popular basses in the world, along with Fender's Jazz Bass and Precision Bass.
This one is a Speial model, which means it has a few special specs.
The neck is made of roasted maple.
This wood was originally developed as a Finnish technique for making saunas.
Treating it at high temperatures volatilizes the water and oil inside the wood, making it highly stable even at high temperatures and humidity.
In terms of sound, it gives the impression of a richer, more mature sound.
The fingerboard is ebony.
I remember that around the time the Stingray Special was introduced, the pickups and preamp were redesigned.
The pickups use neodymium magnets as the material.
This gave it a powerful and wide-range sound.
It retains the classic Stingray tone, but fits more modern ensembles.
The preamp, which was previously driven by 9V, is now driven by 18V.
This allows for more headroom and aims for a clearer tone.
The 3-band EQ allows the sound to be transformed, ranging from a slap-back sound that is comfortable for slapping to a warm vintage tone.
When a single manufacturer handles everything from pickups to preamps in this way, the manufacturer's aims are strongly reflected in the sound, and the result, good or bad, is something very unique.
I personally have a good impression of this renewal, and feel that it is very refined and complete.
The pegs are a redesigned lightweight open gear type.
Needless to say, the balance is very good when the instrument is set up, and in terms of sound, I think the change is in a positive direction to take advantage of the more powerful electronics.
The control plate and bridge are also somewhat lighter.
Personally, I liked the vintage 3-knob era Stingrays and honestly thought the current product could not compare to those in a negative way.
However, in considering this renewed Stingray Special, that thought proved to be a mistake.
If you are looking for a Stingray as well, but only if it is a vintage or classic, this is an ambitious product that you should definitely try.
The frets are roughly 90% remaining.
The truss rod is in good working order.
The neck is in good condition, with the string height at the 12th fret being 2.5mm on the 1st string and 3.0mm on the 4th string. There is one 1mm ding on the grip.
