dragonfly is a long-established Japanese guitar and bass brand.
The company uses the knowledge and expertise it has developed alongside musicians to produce high-quality instruments.
Many musicians have used dragonfly instruments over the years, including Tetsuya Teyang of Fear, and Loathing in Las Vegas, who has been a longtime user of the brand’s basses.
dragonfly offers several models, and this one is the CHB5, featuring a double-cutaway body design.
Players who love the JB style will likely find this model quite familiar and comfortable.
The body features a Cocobolo top with an Ash back.
The exotic, luxurious appearance is very characteristic of dragonfly.
The neck is a laminated construction made from Maple and Bubinga.
Laminating multiple types of wood together helps reduce differences in stability and individual characteristics, resulting in a more stable neck.
The fingerboard has a 400mm radius and is fitted with 214-style stainless steel frets, which are relatively slim.
The scale length is 34 inches, which is somewhat unusual for dragonfly. This will be particularly appealing to players who enjoy the feel and sound of a classic Fender.
The pickups are dual-coil humbucking types and feature coil-tapping capability.
The tuning machines and bridge are made by GOTOH.
The sound is refined while retaining a distinctly traditional character, delivering the solid, dependable bass tone needed to fulfill its role within an ensemble.
Approximately 90% of the fret life remains.
The truss rod is in good condition.
The neck has some relief originating around the neck joint, which can cause buzzing in the higher positions when the action is set low. However, with our standard setup (2.0mm at the 12th fret on the G string and 2.8mm on the B string), there is no buzzing or other issues, and the bass is perfectly playable. Lowering the action further would require fret leveling, but there is sufficient fret height remaining to perform the necessary repair work.
The body and finish have a few minor dings and scratches, but overall, the instrument can be considered to be in excellent condition.
The electronics are in good condition.
No obvious modifications were found.
