Black Smoker is a handmade brand established in 2016 by the BLACK CLOUD workshop in Azumino City, Nagano Prefecture.
Instruments crafted by two highly experienced builders are favored by numerous professional musicians, including Shunsuke Ochi, Futoshi Sakai, and Ren Yamamoto.
This model is a 5-string passive JB type from the TRAD MASTER series.
The body is Alder, the fingerboard is Rosewood, a classic wood combination.
All finishes are lacquer, featuring beautiful aging effects.
The sound and playability also lean towards the traditional side.
Hardware is GOTOH, pickups are original.
Its bass-like sound with rich low end should help it naturally find its bass-like positioning within an ensemble.
Despite being a 5-string, the punchiness of the E string retains a 4-string bass-like character, which is also appealing.
Approximately 90% of the frets remain.
The truss rod is stiff but confirmed to have about 90 degrees of adjustment range.
The neck shows signs of twist with a slight bow toward the G string side. However, it is playable with no issues after adjusting the string height at the 12th fret to 2.5mm for the G string and 3.3mm for the B string.
The body and finish show dents, scratches, and paint chips. Due to the aged finish, it is impossible to determine if these are post-production marks.
The electronics are in good condition.
No obvious modifications were found.
