Ulrich Bass Design is a small handmade bass brand from Germany.
The builder Florian Hertzsch is also a violin maker.

The Retro57 is inspired by the tone of the classic P bass, but finished in a modern style.
2P alder was chosen for the body.
It is finished in an austere yellow finish with an aged finish.
The fingerboard is maple.
The headstock is very distinctive, which is adopted from Spanish guitar construction.
This style of Spanish guitar, perfected by Antonio de Torres in the 1800s, is what Ulrich Bass Design does best and is clearly superior, according to Florian. (We also heard that the currently popular headstock style has manufacturing advantages, but ......)
The pickups are Harry Haeussel P style big magnets.
The string vibrations are very smooth and the output is very smooth, which shows the high performance of these pickups.
The bridge and tuning keys are made by GOTOH.
The panel where the controls are located is fixed with magnets and can be easily removed by hand.
The sound is more like a P-bass, but more raw and nuanced, like an acoustic bass played with a piezo PU.
This lack of ornamentation and speed may make it difficult to play in some ways, but it more than makes up for it and makes the bass fun to play.
