Description & Condition
Benevolent Basses is a bass brand by Korean builder Jaeyoung Jung.
He studied instrument making at the Roberto Venn School of Luthiery in the U.S., which has produced Adamovic's Nicola and others, and later started his own brand.
He has a reputation for designing basses that incorporate acoustic styles, and his originality and excellent quality are highly acclaimed.
This is a 5-string Benevolo Cinque in high C, custom-ordered by GIB.
As you can see, the design is a bold mix of double basses.
The body top is a beautiful white spruce and the back is alder.
It has a hollowbody, a bit like Rick Turner or Rob Allen around here.
The neck is 1-piece maple, and the fingerboard is black ebony.
The scale is 33" and the pitch between strings is 17mm, which is a little small.
Common strings can be used.
The PU is only a piezo in the saddle section, and the impedance is adjusted by a buffer made by HUMPBACK.
So it can be wired just like a normal electric bass. There is no special need for a foot preamp, etc.
It is comfortable to hold and fits well.
The slightly shorter scale makes it feel more comfortable.
Sound-wise, it is quite close to the double bass.
This would not be possible if it were simply made fretless, so it is probably due to the clear concept and the high level of design ability to give shape to it.
It has plenty of lows, which makes it easy to handle.
With a single piezo shot, it can be a little too crunchy, or the overemphasized rawness can be uncomfortable, but there is nothing like that with this one.
Rather than using a poor EUB, I think that using such an instrument gives a stronger nuance like a contrabass.
For those who originally play the electric bass, these instruments are also very useful. It should be fun to play.
This is a type of instrument that is not often seen on the market, so we hope you will give it a try. We are waiting for you.
