De Gier is a Dutch brand started by Sander De Gier in 1996.
He originally focused on creating unique and modern bass guitars, but now his main products are in the Fender style.
While the brand was already highly regarded, since releasing the BeBop, a JB-style model, its exceptional quality has kept him completely occupied with that project.
Currently, in addition to the Fender style, they also offer unique models incorporating Gibson style elements.
I encountered De Gier at the Guitar Summit held in Germany in 2022.
At first glance, its appearance filled me with anticipation, and the moment I plucked the strings, that anticipation turned into certainty.
I was so overwhelmed by its incredible quality that I began negotiations.
Initially, sales to Japan were difficult for various reasons, but after persistent negotiations, we have now been able to begin sales. (It was truly amazing, and I absolutely wanted to introduce it to Japanese musicians, so I persevered for quite some time.)
Many other brands exhibited at Guitar Summit, and I spoke with various builders.
De Gier was mentioned several times, and it seemed their capabilities were widely known.
Several builders even mentioned ordering custom basses from De Gier.
That's how highly regarded the brand is in Europe and America.
And I myself share the same highest regard.
This model is their biggest hit, the Bebop.
Specifically, it's the Classic model, a passive model that aims for a more vintage style.
This product also attracted attention at the Guitar Summit held in Germany in 2025. GIB has previously stocked 4-string JB and PB models, as well as 5-string PB models, but this 5-string JB type has finally arrived.
The extensive research and development that went into creating this model is evident in its magnificent and compelling growling sound.
As a Classic model, several aspects have been changed from the standard model to more traditional specifications.
The body is made of alder, the neck is maple, and the fingerboard is rosewood—a classic combination.
The fingerboard uses a round-laminated construction.
A concern with passive 5-string basses is that they can lack openness and strong high frequencies.
This model addresses this by increasing the proportion of maple, resulting in a clearer tone.
It's clear that this model is designed with a stronger focus on the so-called 4-string characteristics and vintage style compared to the standard model.
While the standard Bebop has carbon fiber reinforcement to correct neck warping, the Classic model does not.
This gives it a traditional feel, similar to vintage Fender basses. While it has the disadvantage of not being able to achieve extremely low action, it's a clear advantage for those who prefer a different setup or are looking for a Fender-style 5-string bass.
Another distinctive feature is the thinner headstock compared to standard models.
In fact, measuring the headstock thickness of vintage Fenders reveals that it's thinner than current models and modern brands.
This model uses the same thickness as pre-CBS vintage Fenders.
It goes without saying that the sincere approach of thoroughly researching the instrument, and differentiating even the smallest specifications from standard models, contributes to the final, compelling sound.
The bridge is a classic spiral style.
The tuning machines are GOTOH RES-O-LITE, a lightweight yet relatively vintage-feeling choice.
The pickups are Lindy Fralin.
It's built with a simple passive circuit of volume and tone.
The potentiometers are CTS, and the electronics, including the wires, are finished with vintage-compliant parts.
The color is Ice Blue Metallic.
The finish is nitrocellulose lacquer, and it's finished with a relic treatment.
The excellent atmosphere created by this coloring and relic treatment is one of De Gier's signature features.
The quality is truly high.
We've included images in the product photos that convey the texture of the relic treatment.
Please take a look.
The bass strings have an open nuance, yet the treble strings don't become thin, and the sweet midrange is not lost.
Despite being a 5-string, it retains the gritty, trebly feel characteristic of a JB, and is full of fresh, vibrant intonation.
Rich in harmonics, it supports the ensemble with a strong fundamental tone—truly the ideal JB.
And the most amazing thing is that it achieves all these elements in a passive style.
This is something that can only be achieved by a builder with truly high design and technical skills.
This is exactly what we've been looking for in a passive 5-string JB.
We promise you'll be impressed.
