Description & Condition
Music Man emerged as Leo Fender's second brand and became beloved by bassists worldwide.
Many artists, including Louis Johnson and Flea, are known to use their basses. (Titles omitted)
The Stingray is a classic model that enjoys overwhelming popularity within the brand.
Alongside Fender's Jazz Bass and Precision Bass, it's safe to say it's one of the most popular basses in the world.
The Stingray's specifications differ before and after Music Man was acquired by Erni Ball; pre-acquisition models are given special treatment as "Pre-Erni" models.
The Stingray was introduced in 1976, and the specifications changed around 1980.
This particular model is a 1978 model.
Both the neck date and neck pocket are marked "1978."
There is an engraving on the bass pocket that reads "1377841."
Based on this, we determined it was manufactured in 1978.
The body is likely ash.
Considering the color, there's a high possibility it's a different wood.
The neck and fretboard are maple.
It's a beautifully crafted one-piece construction with no glued joints.
It has been refretted, and the neck is currently in excellent condition.
Because we performed the refretting, there is ample room in both the tightening and loosening directions of the truss rod. However, due to the processing of the rod nut, it requires considerable force, so we haven't been able to confirm the exact amount of adjustment.
Please understand this beforehand.
The pickups and preamp are original.
Key features of the Pre Ernie include a body without contouring, a 3-knob circuit, a 3-bolt neck joint, and a string-through-body bridge.
It has a more woody, low-end sound compared to models with 4-knob preamps.
However, this is only in comparison; when viewed alone, boosting with the preamp produces a powerful, punchy sound.
Boosting the lows results in a punchier sound, while boosting the treble creates a more flamboyant and attack-oriented sound.
This particular instrument appears to be in relatively good condition.
It's also recommended for those concerned about the remaining fret and truss rod length.
This is one of those fascinating vintage basses that continues to be talked about today.
The frets have approximately 95% remaining.
We refretted this bass, so there is room for adjustment in both the tightening and loosening directions of the truss rod. However, due to the processing of the rod nut, it requires considerable force, so we haven't been able to confirm the exact adjustment range.
The neck is in good condition.
The body and paint surface show some dents and scratches. There is some paint cracking near the joint.
The electronics are in good condition.
Refretting and nut replacement have been performed. The fretboard has been repainted. The truss rod nut has been replaced.
