Description & Condition
De Gier is a Dutch brand founded in 1996 by Sander De Gier.
He originally focused on creating unique and modern bass guitars, but now his main products are in the Fender style.
While the brand was already highly regarded, since the release of the BeBop, a JB-style model, its exceptional quality has kept him completely occupied with that project.
Currently, in addition to the Fender style, they also offer unique models incorporating Gibson style elements.
I first encountered De Gier at the Guitar Summit held in Germany in 2022.
At first glance, its presence filled me with anticipation, and that feeling turned into certainty the moment I strummed the strings.
I was so overwhelmed by the incredible quality that I began negotiations.
Initially, sales to Japan were difficult for various reasons, but after persistent negotiations, we have now been able to begin sales. (It was truly amazing, and I really wanted to introduce it to Japanese musicians, so I persisted quite a bit.)
Many other brands exhibited at Guitar Summit, and I spoke with various builders.
De Gier came up several times, and it seemed their capabilities were widely known.
Some builders even mentioned ordering custom basses from De Gier.
That's how highly regarded the brand is in Europe and America.
And I myself hold it in the highest regard.
This model is their specialty and highly regarded Fender-style PB.
This is a Classic model, so several aspects have been changed from the standard model to more traditional specifications.
The body is alder, and the fingerboard is rosewood—a classic combination.
The fingerboard uses a round-laminated construction.
A concern with passive 5-string basses is that they can lack openness and strong high frequencies.
This model addresses this by increasing the proportion of maple, resulting in a clearer tone. This model is designed with a stronger emphasis on the so-called "four-string" characteristics and vintage style compared to the standard model.
The neck is made of beautiful quarter-sawn maple.
While the standard Soulmate has carbon reinforcement to correct neck warping, the Classic model does not.
This results in a traditional feel reminiscent of vintage Fenders.
Although this has the disadvantage of not allowing for extremely low action, it is a clear advantage for those who prefer a different setup or are looking for a Fender-style five-string bass.
Another distinctive feature is the thinner headstock compared to the standard model.
In fact, measuring the headstock thickness of vintage Fenders reveals that it is thinner than current models and modern brands.
It goes without saying that this meticulous attention to detail, even down to the smallest specifications, and the sincere approach of deeply researching the instrument, contribute to the final, compelling sound.
The bridge is original, a classic spiral style.
The tuning machines are RES-O-LITE, a lightweight yet relatively vintage-feeling choice. De Gier basses utilize various pickups depending on the individual instrument, but this particular bass features Lollar pickups.
The controls are a simple passive circuit with volume and tone.
The potentiometers are CTS, and the electronics, including the wiring, are finished with vintage-inspired parts.
The color is Sunburst.
The finish is nitrocellulose lacquer with a relic treatment.
The excellent atmosphere created by this coloring and relic treatment is one of De Gier's signature features.
The quality is truly high.
The sound is vibrant and lively, with a full bass, rich midrange, and juicy treble.
It fulfills the range required of a bass in an ensemble and resonates deeply with bassists.
Despite being a 5-string bass, the 3rd and 4th strings have a pleasant low-mid range and an open nuance, while the 1st and 2nd strings retain a rich, harmonically rich midrange.
It possesses a beautiful character from low to high frequencies, without any negative elements.
The excellent articulation of the low B and the attractive trebly nuances are appealing, and there aren't many builders who can create a bass like this.
This is what we've been searching for in a Fender-style 5-string bass.
We promise you'll be impressed.
