AV Basses is a high-end Czech brand that gained significant attention when Jamiroquai bassist Paul Turner began using their basses.
The brand was started in the 1990s by professional bassist Ales Vychodil.
At the time, major instrument manufacturers supplied numerous basses to the market, but none could meet his requirements.
To satisfy his own needs, he began building custom basses himself.
In the 2000s, he started OEM manufacturing for boutique brands in Europe and America, showcasing his high level of manufacturing skill.
I met builder Ales at the Guitar Summit in Germany in 2019.
He is a wonderful person, with a strong spirit of challenge, yet always considerate of the musician.
I have placed several orders with him since 2019, and he has consistently provided high-quality instruments.
This consistency demonstrates the brand's strength and is universally important.
This model was exhibited at the 2025 Guitar Summit.
Basically, it's based on the JB style, but actively incorporates modern specifications.
The body top is made of Burl Poplar, and the back is made of Swamp Ash.
Both have very beautiful wood grain.
The neck is made of Roasted Birdseye Maple, and the fingerboard is Macassar Ebony.
A very luxurious wood combination.
The tuning machines and bridge are made by HIPSHOT.
The pickups are Nordstrand FatStack, and the preamp is also a Nordstrand 3B.
The controls are master volume (push/pull - active/passive), balancer, middle, and treble/bass.
Sound-wise, it feels smooth and wide-ranging.
Yet it also possesses a thick and powerful nuance.
It gives the impression of a properly modernized update of the JB, and I feel it's a comfortable instrument for many modern professional bassists.

Fingerboard : Macassar Ebony. Pearl side and top dots. Ebony nut. 21 medium jumbo frets 2.4 mm.
Pickups : Nordstrand FatStack set of pickups.
Hardware : Hipshot A Style bridge 18 mm (.708"") string spacing, Hipshot Ultralite tuners 3/8"" posts Lollipop, black.
Electronic: Active/passive Nordstrand 3b, 3 band
Controls : 1x main volume with push pull to passive, 1x blend, 1x EQ Mid (tone control in passive), 1x stacked EQ Treble/Bass, output jack 6.3 mm Stereo.
Strings: DR Pure Blues Nickel Roundwounds 045-125 gauge
Finish: High glossy lacquer on the body and headstock, satin matte neck.
As this is a show model, there may be some minor scratches and dents.
