Ulrich Bass Design is a small handmade bass brand from Germany.
The builder, Florian Hertzsch, is also a violin maker.

A major feature of this brand is that it is finished with a neat balance as a modern bass while incorporating the classical techniques and Spanish guitar structure that have been cultivated over a wide range.

I have met Florian many times in Germany, and he is a man with a really nice personality.
He is young, intelligent, and full of talent, and I believe he will carry the next generation of the guitar industry on his shoulders.

Retro57 is a model that has a classic P bass tone as a motif, but is finished in a modern style.

The body is made of ultra-lightweight Alder.
The fingerboard and neck are Maple.

I left the choice of wood for this area to Florian.
In the end, I think that trust led to very positive results.

The pickup uses Haeussel P old style.
The firm string vibrations are outputted smoothly, giving you a sense of the high performance of this pickup.

The tuning key is GOTOH and the bridge is HIPSHOT.
The panel where the controls are located is fixed with magnets and can be easily removed by hand.

The headstock is very distinctive, and it adopts the structure of a Spanish guitar.

Florian tells us that this style of Spanish guitar, perfected by Antonio de Torres in the 1800s, is Ulrich Bass Design's best and clearly superior. (I've also heard that currently popular headstock styles have manufacturing advantages...)

I'd say it's more like a P bass, but it feels more raw, like an acoustic bass made with a high-quality piezo PU.

This lack of decoration and sense of speed may make it difficult to play in a sense, but it more than makes up for it by making you feel the joy of playing the bass.
