Description & Condition
The builder Florian Hertzsch is also a violin maker.
The main feature of this brand is that it is a modern bass that is neatly balanced with the widely cultivated classical techniques and Spanish guitar construction.
The Retro57 is inspired by the tone of the classic P bass, but finished in a modern style.
The body is made of ultra-lightweight Honduran cedar.
This gives it the richness of an acoustic guitar sound, and a very strong responsiveness to picking.
The pickups are Haeussel P old style.
The crisp string vibrations are produced in a smooth and gentle manner, showing the high performance of these pickups.
Bridge and tuning keys are made by GOTOH.
The panel where the controls are located is fixed with a magnet and can be easily removed by hand.
The headstock is very distinctive, and is based on the structure of Spanish guitars.
This style of Spanish guitar, perfected by Antonio de Torres in the 1800s, is what Ulrich Bass Design does best and is clearly superior, according to Florian. (We also heard that the currently popular headstock style has manufacturing advantages, but ......)
As far as whether it is P bass-like, I feel it is more raw than that, more like an acoustic bass with a piezo PU.
This lack of ornamentation and speed may make it difficult to play in some ways, but it more than makes up for it and makes the bass fun to play.
