Description & Condition
Musicman started as Leo Fender's second brand and captivated many musicians with its innovative designs.
The Stingray Bass is one of the brand's most famous models.
Many artists, including Louis Johnson and Flea, have used Stingray basses.
The specifications of Stingray basses before and after the acquisition of Music Man by Erni Ball were different, and the models before the acquisition were given special treatment as “Pre Ernie” basses.
The Stingray was introduced in 1976, and the specifications were changed roughly in 1980.
This particular piece was manufactured in 1978 and can be said to be one of the first.
The pot dates are “1377812”, “1377815”, and “1377819”, and we have determined that these are from 1978.
The neck date is “MAY 20 1977” and the neck pocket is marked “MAY 12 1977”.
Major features include an uncontoured body, a 3-knob circuit, a 3-point joint, and a back-through bridge.
It has a woodier, more lo-fi sound than the 4-knob era models with preamps.
However, that is only by comparison, and on its own, it can sound crunchy and powerful when boosted with a preamp.
The neck, made of maple, is one-piece with no lamination, and is beautifully crafted.
There are approximately 60% frets remaining. The truss rod is in good working order.
The neck is in good condition. There is some slight fret lift, but it can be played with no problem at the GIB standard string height of 2.0 to 2.5mm. There is a slight crack between the truss rod and nut, and a slight wood ridge in the vicinity. This is a common symptom of basses from the era when truss rod adjustment ports were made on the head side. Currently, there is no problem with the truss rod action, and there is practically no effect on the nut or the first fret. Personally, I think it is within the acceptable range, but please fully understand that the feeling here differs from person to person.
As for the condition of the body and painted surface, there is a seal mark on the top of the body with a diameter of about 85mm. (There is no stickiness.). Other dents and scratches can be seen throughout.
The electrical system is in good condition.
It is possible that the fretboard has been refretted as there are no paint cracks where the frets are floating, and given this, it is necessary to consider the possibility that the nut has been replaced as well. The bridge saddle has been replaced. (Octave screws, bridge plate, and springs are original.) Strap pins have been replaced with schaller type. 2 PG screws are cleaner than the others, so they may have been replaced.

The D'addario EXL, trusted by professional musicians, is used in the setup.
It is characterized by a powerful attack and rich overtones, and its performance is truly worthy of being called a standard.
Please enjoy these high-quality strings that maximize the performance and character of the instrument, as well.
GIB craftsmen will adjust them to make them easy to play and deliver them to you.
