Description & Condition
J.W. Black is a former Fender master builder who has continued to build great guitars and basses since becoming independent.
He started his career in the 70's, and after working for Sadowsky, Rudy's, and Fender, and repairing vintage guitars as an individual (he worked on guitars for Frank Zappa, Eric Clapton, and others), he launched his own eponymous brand.
This model is based on his concept, but manufactured in Japan to keep the price low.
J.W. Black never intended to make a 5-string JB under his own brand.
He once told me that it was because his own work here was inspired by Leo Fender.
So, the J.W.Black brand 5-string bass would not have been possible without this series made in Japan.
The body is made of alder and the fingerboard is rosewood, a classic configuration.
It is unique in that it is inspired by vintage style basses but has modern elements.
The electrical system is fully equipped with CTS pots, Circle D capacitors, and crosswires.
The PU seems to be the same Callahan brand as in the USA.
While the motif is based on vintage style basses, it has modern elements and features a fat yet tight nuance that comes through.
The Callahan is packed with the royal elements of a jazz bass, yet has a high playability and hot sound that is ideal for the modern musician.
The frets are approximately 90% remaining.
The truss rod is in good working order.
The condition of the neck shows symptoms of high rise, but can be played without problems at a string height of 2.2mm to 3.0mm.
The condition of the body and painted surface is relatively clean, with about 5mm of paint baldness near the neck joint and at the body end, but there are no other noticeable scratches.
The electrical system is in good condition.
No obvious modifications were found.
