Grunt Guitars is a Slovakian high-brand manufacturer of high-quality basses.
Master builder Martin's family has been a woodworker for generations.
As a result, he learned basic woodworking from his grandfather and father from an early age.
He is a progressive Christian and was friends with the musicians who played in his church.
He was just 14 years old when he began building cajons and basses for the musicians.
Fortunately, his house had a storehouse of wood, many of which would be ideal for basses as they would be stored and dried for over 40 years.
Using those woods, he began repairing guitars and basses and building custom guitars and basses at a young age.
While researching basses and woods, he discovered that the forests of Slovakia had some of the finest woods sought by guitar builders around the world.
Already while still in high school, he began buying logs and was fascinated by the idea of processing the wood where it was grown, realizing the high quality of the wood.
As a result, every bass he makes is inscribed with the words "PROUDLY MADE IN BARDEJOV SLOVAK REPUBLIC" (Proudly Made in Bardejov, Slovakia).
Before making the base, he first searches for suitable trees in the forest.
The logs are then cut to the best material for manufacturing the base and dried naturally.
In other words, he does all the work himself, from finding the trees to storing them in cases and shipping them.
Another great thing about him is that he is constantly researching modern techniques and styles.
For example, he has perfected with experts at the University of Zvolen a unique technique of heat treatment that greatly improves the resonance characteristics of wood, and he uses it on his basses.
He develops his own pickups that fit his style 100%, and even the bridge is of his own design.
By putting so many elements under his control, the basses he produces have both a strong identity and an unwavering concept.
This model was purchased at the Guitar Summit 2022 in Mannheim, Germany, and is a so-called "show model.
There are several grades available, and this is the top-of-the-line Master Build series.
Predator is very popular as their flagship model.
The beautiful flowing body shape inherits the soul of the JB while providing players with a more comfortable playing experience.
Painted in a beautiful fade color, the body is constructed of the finest alder and flame maple.
And the neck and fingerboard are made of Carpathian Maple.
These woods are carefully selected from their decades-old stock.
The paint is Italian lacquer, hard and thin.
The tuning keys are GOTOH RES-O-LITE.
The preamp is an Aguilar OBP-3. Controls are front volume, rear volume, bass, middle, treble, middle frequency band switching SW (400-800Hz), and preamp bypass SW.
The neck area is beautifully and meticulously detailed with stainless steel frets driven in.
Fingerboard R is 14-16" compound radius.
Flat R as you go to the high frets for optimum playability throughout.
The sound is characterized by rich midrange on top of full low range, and speedy and clear high range.
With the PU tapped, it is fine JB-like, and perfectly balanced when swung to the front or rear in the series state.
This is a tour de force that is faithful to a solid concept, carefully incorporating fine woods and hardware.
