Description & Condition

FAGO (発高) is a Chinese bass guitar brand that proclaims ""MADE BY PLAYERS FOR PLAYERS"" and ""BE NICE TO PLAYERS."" They are committed to small-batch production, with each instrument meticulously assembled, adjusted, and inspected by hand.

Lin, the brand's leader, has his own workshop where he personally adjusts the nut and bridge saddle of each instrument.

FAGO continues to evolve rapidly, and this latest batch features numerous improvements.

This model is from the top-of-the-line Select series.

In China, it's known as ""FAGO S,"" and features an ""S"" signature on the back of the headstock. Out of 150 sets of tonewood prepared, only 30 sets with particularly superior body and neck wood are selected for production. (The remaining 120 sets become the Standard series.)

The body is made of alder, and the neck is maple—a classic combination.

The maple used for the neck is quarter-sawn. Quarter-sawn wood is characterized by its high stability and resistance to warping and twisting because the grain runs perpendicular to the fretboard. Furthermore, quarter-sawn wood is expensive and is not typically used unless intentionally selected. Therefore, the use of quarter-sawn wood is evidence that the wood has been carefully selected for its quality.

The nut is hand-finished cow bone.

The nut width is a standard 38.7mm (actual measurement). The neck shape is a handmade C-shape with a standard thickness.

The fretboard is Indian rosewood, contributing to a full, warm sound.

The fretboard radius is 10 inches. Abalone dots are used for the position markers. There are 21 medium jumbo frets.

The pickups are original Fago Fat Jazz Pickups, mounted in the 60s position. These are designed with a high-end US brand as a reference. They are slow-wound, using USA MWS wire. The basic style is classic.

The preamp is the original Fago Transparent PRE. It features a 2-band EQ and has a clear yet vibrant character. The EQ's variable frequency range is exquisitely set; the bass includes components in the sub-low range, while the higher low frequencies around 100Hz are not excessively boosted, and the boost range is moderate, giving a smart impression.

The treble is designed with a wide range and boost range. This allows for flexible control of the treble boost when combined with the passive tone. This is similar to Alleva-Coppolo, Sadowsky, and JIENIE. It shares a similar design philosophy to the BASSES series.

Controls include Volume, Balancer, Tone, Bass, and Treble.

A mini toggle switch allows switching between active and passive modes.

Electronic components are mounted on the pickguard, and conductive shielding is applied to the cavity and the back of the pickguard. The battery can be replaced from the battery box on the back, and a Procell battery is included at the time of shipment.

The paint finish is thinner than that of the Standard series.

The included gig bag is also a higher-end FAGO tour bag compared to the Standard series.

The bridge is a FAGO Fat Punch Bridge (A Type).

It has a large base plate, and the string spacing at the bridge is 19mm.

The tuning machines are Fago Smooth machines made by WSC (Korea). The Tune (gear ratio 20:1) allows for lightweight and highly accurate tuning.

The sound retains the characteristics of a Jazz Bass, but is more powerful and has a wider high range.

Incorporating many modern elements such as the fretboard radius and medium jumbo frets, it also has a slightly tighter texture. Yet, the playability is not too stiff, maintaining a supple feel. This is likely due to the bridge and nut not creating excessively large string angles.

The difference between the Standard and Select series is that the former has a tighter, more modern feel, while the latter has a richer and more supple feel. While there is a price difference between these series, choosing based on sound characteristics is perfectly acceptable.

The ability to combine the wide range characteristic of modern basses with the strong sound reminiscent of 90s NYC basses is extremely appealing.

All FAGO basses undergo checks by the designer himself before shipment.

If you are looking for a carefully crafted bass in this price range, please give this one a try.
