"De Gier is a Dutch brand founded in 1996 by Sander De Gier.

He originally focused on creating unique and modern bass guitars, but now his products primarily emphasize Fender-style designs.

While the brand was already highly regarded, the release of the BeBop, a JB-style model, has been so successful that it has kept him completely occupied with production.

Currently, in addition to Fender styles, they also offer unique models incorporating Gibson styles.

I first encountered De Gier at the Guitar Summit held in Germany in 2022.

At first glance, its presence filled me with anticipation, and that feeling was confirmed the moment I strummed the strings.

I was so overwhelmed by the incredible quality that I began negotiations.

Initially, sales to Japan were difficult for various reasons, but after persistent negotiations, we have now been able to begin sales. (It was truly amazing, and I absolutely wanted to introduce it to Japanese musicians, so I persisted quite a bit.)

Many other brands exhibited at Guitar Summit, and I spoke with various builders.

De Gier came up several times, and it seemed their capabilities were widely known.

Several builders even mentioned ordering custom basses from De Gier.

That's how highly regarded the brand is in Europe and America.

And I myself hold it in the highest regard.

This model is their biggest hit, the Bebop.

It's the Classic model, a passive model that aims for a more vintage style.

This product also attracted attention at the Guitar Summit held in Germany in 2025.

While GIB has previously stocked 4-string JB and PB, and 5-string PB models, this 5-string JB type has finally arrived.

The incredible, compelling sound is a testament to the extensive research and development that went into creating this model.

As a Classic model, several aspects have been changed from the standard model to reflect traditional specifications.

The body is made of alder, the neck is maple, and the fretboard is also maple—a classic combination.

The fretboard is indeed attached.

A concern with passive 5-string basses is that they can lack openness and strong high frequencies.

This model achieves a clearer tone by increasing the proportion of maple.

While standard Bebop basses have carbon reinforcement to compensate for neck warping, the Classic model does not.

This results in a traditional feel reminiscent of vintage Fenders.

Although this has the disadvantage of not allowing for extremely low action, it is a clear advantage for those who prefer a different setup or are looking for a Fender-style 5-string bass.

Another distinctive feature is the thinner headstock compared to the standard model.

In fact, measuring the headstock thickness of vintage Fenders reveals that it is thinner than current models and modern brands.

This model uses the same thickness as pre-CBS vintage Fenders.

The meticulous attention to detail, even down to the smallest specifications, and the sincere approach to thoroughly researching the instrument, undoubtedly contribute to the compelling final sound.

The bridge is a classic spiral style.

The tuning machines are GOTOH RES-O-LITE, a lightweight yet relatively vintage-feeling choice.

The pickups are Lindy Fralin.

The circuit is a simple passive design with volume and tone controls.

The potentiometers are CTS, and the electronics, including the wires, are finished with vintage-inspired parts.

The color is Black.

The finish is nitrocellulose lacquer with a relic treatment.

The excellent atmosphere created by this coloring and relic treatment is one of De Gier's defining characteristics.

The quality is truly high.

The bass strings have an open nuance, yet the treble strings don't become thin, and the sweet midrange is retained.

Despite being a 5-string, it retains the gritty, trebly feel characteristic of a JB, and is full of vibrant pitch.

Rich in harmonics and supporting the ensemble with a strong fundamental tone, it's truly the ideal JB.

And the most amazing thing is that it achieves all these elements in a passive style.

This is something that can only be achieved by a builder with truly high design and technical skills.

This is exactly what we've been looking for in a passive 5-string JB.
