Bass String Comparison: D'Addario vs Elixir vs Stringjoy vs Pitbull (with Audio)
Every bassist is on a never-ending search for the perfect set of strings. To help with that search, we made a set of recordings in which the only thing that changes is the strings: same bass, same settings, four different sets.
The strings we compared:
- D'Addario XL Nickel
- Elixir Nanoweb
- Stringjoy
- Pitbull Strings
That is two industry standards plus two smaller brands that Geek IN Box imports into Japan.
The Four Sets
D'Addario XL Nickel
D'Addario is the undisputed number one string maker. Among its many lines, XL Nickel is by far the most popular, a true standard with plenty of professional users. The sound is powerful and bright.
Elixir Nanoweb
Since its debut in 1997, Elixir has been the name that defines coated strings. With uncoated strings, sweat and dirt work their way into the gaps between the windings and the tone deteriorates. Elixir coats the entire wound string to keep dirt out, which protects against corrosion and loss of tone. The smooth, slick feel also helps playability.
Stringjoy

Stringjoy strings are made by hand in Nashville, USA. The process follows traditional European methods and every step is done by people, not automated machines. Defective strings are rejected, so every set that ships is finished to a high standard. The materials are pure, high-quality American nickel and other alloys, with great care taken to remove impurities.
Like other hand-wound strings such as R. Cocco, Stringjoy has a composed tone with a low center of gravity: a very "bass-like" sound.
Pitbull Strings

Pitbull is a brand making high-quality strings in Turkey, using carefully selected nickel and other materials sourced from the United States.
The sound is calm, almost as if it had no character of its own, and that is exactly its character. The voice of the bass itself comes through faithfully, which is why we fit Pitbull Strings to every instrument on our shop floor. If you dislike strings that add their own flavor, this flat, neutral response is for you.
