Description & Condition
This bass has been leveled using PLEK, and will be shipped with a string height of 1.5mm to 2.0mm.
Kikuchi Guitars is a premium brand created by Yoshiyuki Kikuchi (and Okada International), who has earned the unwavering trust of many professional bassists, particularly for his work with Sadowsky.
While the brand’s initial offerings were all one-of-a-kind custom models, the Hermes series represents a mass-produced line with standardized specifications.
It might be a slight oversimplification, but the Hermes series corresponds to the Sadowsky Metroline from the Japanese-made era, while the TYO series occupies a position similar to that of the custom models.
The design is based on the JB, a model that has earned a particularly strong reputation among the many basses designed by Mr. Kikuchi.
It refines his previous work and brings it together in a style more suited to modern basses.
The body is made of ash and the fingerboard of rosewood—a classic choice.
While many custom models feature chambered bodies, all models in the Hermes Series have solid bodies.
Some people prefer solid bodies. (Personally, I preferred the solid body.)
The shape is a Dinky, not a full-size model.
This is one of the key differences from the company’s Three Dots line.
The pickups are split-coil types manufactured by DiMarzio.
They are similar to those used when Sadowsky Metroline pickups were made in Japan.
Their defining characteristics are low noise and a bright, trebly tone.
The preamp is a custom type specially designed by EMG for this model.
The specs are simple, offering only bass and treble boosts.
This fits the instrument perfectly, as one would expect.
When you boost the treble, the peak of the midrange dip is exquisite, making the bass sound tight and stylish.
Yet, it doesn’t lose its bass-like character and retains beautiful harmonics.
It eloquently demonstrates the significance of boosting with a two-band EQ.
Controls include volume, balancer, tone (with a push/pull switch to bypass the preamp), and treble/bass.
The factory string action is on the low side, though not as low as on custom models, and the playability is excellent.
I think it will feel comfortable even for those who usually play Fender-style basses with Fender-style settings.
The precision of the neck, which has long been highly regarded, is superb, and its quality is fully realized.
The neck shape is slightly flat and on the thinner side.
It is characterized by an extremely fast, responsive feel.
Yet it delivers ample low-end presence, resulting in a sound rich in harmonics with a trebly character.
This is a truly sublime instrument, made possible precisely because Mr. Kikuchi builds basses in the modern era.
