Music Man emerged as Leo Fender's second brand and was beloved by bassists worldwide.

It is known that many artists, including Louis Johnson and Flea, favor the company's basses.

While the Stingray is famous as the company's flagship model, the subsequently released Sabre is equally highly regarded.

This is a Music Man from before its acquisition by Ernie Ball, and models from this pre-acquisition era receive special recognition as “Pre-Ernie.”

This particular instrument was manufactured in 1979, making it an early example.

The neck pocket is stamped “SEP 4 1979.”

The pot dates are 1377913, 1377918, and 1377919 respectively.

Based on these combined factors, the year has been definitively determined.

The body is likely ash, with a maple neck and fingerboard.

Distinctive features include a three-point joint and a truss rod accessible from the headstock.

It features two original humbucking pickups.

Compared to the single-pickup Stingray, this allows for a wider range of sound shaping.

The preamp is the original two-band preamp.

Boosting the low end yields a punchy sound, while boosting the treble creates a brighter, more aggressive tone.

The switches include a pickup selector, phase switch, and treble boost switch.

These features suggest it could be considered a precursor to the G&L L-2000 model.

Compared to the Stingray, it produces a brighter, crisper sound.

This unique sound is something only this model can deliver, and it's quite appealing.

It's one of those vintage basses that will likely gain more appreciation over time.

Approximately 60% of the frets remain.

The truss rod is in good condition.

The neck shows a slight twist with a tendency to bow upward toward the E string side. However, it's playable with no issues after adjusting the string height at the 12th fret to 2.5mm on the G string and 3.0mm on the E string.

The body and finish exhibit vintage looks with scattered dents, scratches, and rust on parts. The pickguard has a crack likely caused by screw insertion and is partially chipped.

Electronics are in good condition.

The battery snap and jack have been replaced.

Refret work was performed, and the nut was replaced as part of that process.

The 3rd string peg has been replaced. The pickguard has been replaced.

The original nut and the failed original peg are included.
