Ulrich Bass Design is a small, handmade bass guitar brand in Germany.
Builder Florian Hertzsch is also a violin maker.
A major feature of this brand is that they incorporate classical techniques and Spanish guitar construction, all of which are cultivated extensively, while creating modern basses with a refined balance.
I've met Florian many times in Germany, and he's a truly wonderful man.
He's young, intelligent, and talented, and I believe he will lead the next generation of the guitar industry.
The Retro57 is a model inspired by the classic P-bass tone, but finished in a modern style.
The body is made of ultra-lightweight ash.
The fingerboard and neck are maple.
I left the choice of wood for these areas entirely to Florian.
Ultimately, I believe that trust has led to very positive results.
The pickups are Häussel P-style.
The crisp, taut string vibrations are vividly reproduced, demonstrating the high performance of these pickups.
The tuning keys are GOTOH and the bridge is HIPSHOT, ensuring perfection.
The panel containing the controls is attached with a magnet and can be easily removed by hand.
The headstock is very distinctive, incorporating the structure of a Spanish guitar.
Florian told me that this style of Spanish guitar, perfected by Antonio de Torres in the 1800s, was the best for Ulrich Bass Design and is clearly superior. (He also said that the headstock style popular today has manufacturing advantages.)
As for whether it sounds like a typical P-bass, it's actually more natural, with a nuance reminiscent of an acoustic bass played with a high-quality piezo pickup.
This lack of ornamentation and speed may make it difficult to play in some ways, but the joy of playing the bass more than makes up for it.

● Lifetime free maintenance
Instruments purchased from our store are eligible for a lifetime free "string vibration setup" (normally ¥4,400). (Reservation required)
- Please present your signed warranty card.
- Only the original purchaser from a GIB or TONIQ store or online shop is eligible.
- Please note that you are responsible for all shipping and other costs.
● Repurchase Price Guarantee
If you sell your purchase within six months of purchase, we guarantee the repurchase price. This guarantee is 50% for new instruments and 70% for used instruments.
● Defect Guarantee
Products sold by Basic Co., Ltd. are guaranteed against defects. With the exception of some products such as consignment items, we will repair any malfunctions that occur under normal use within the warranty period from the date of purchase free of charge (returns and refunds will only be accepted if repairs are not possible).
The warranty period is three months for used products and one year for new products.
Please note that even within the warranty period, there will be a fee for repairs in the following cases:
- Malfunctions or damage caused by transportation, moving, dropping, etc.
- Replacement of consumables.
- Malfunctions or damage caused by fire, earthquake, salt damage, gas damage, or abnormal voltage.
- Malfunctions or damage caused by handling that violates the precautions in the instruction manual.
- Malfunctions or damage to parts repaired or modified by parties other than us.
- If your name, model name, serial number, etc. are not written on the warranty card, or if the wording has been altered.
- If the warranty card is not presented or is lost.
(The warranty is only available for purchases within Japan.)
