Sago is a handmade guitar brand based in Hyogo, specializing in fully custom-made instruments that fulfill every customer request.
Their regular models—though most are essentially one-offs—are also highly regarded, crafted using the knowledge and skills honed over many years.
Sago is a brand deeply trusted by musicians.
Artists like Mr. Tabuchi of Unison Square Garden, RIO of Mary's Blood, and Mr. Kusakari of Sakanaction are listed as Sago artists.
This model is a classic JB replica custom-ordered from GIB.
The body is Alder, and the fingerboard is Rosewood.
We specified this classic wood combination.
Noteworthy features include the high-quality aged finish and authentic vintage sound.
The staff member responsible for this aged finish was formerly employed by Fender and was part of the team led by highly regarded master builder Carlos Lopez.
Carlos's team primarily handled relic finishing work and was highly esteemed both within and outside the company.
It is precisely because of a builder with such a background that this model was made possible.
Starting with a reevaluation of the finish, we meticulously examined every detail to enhance quality—from the build of the lacquer coating to the techniques and intensity of the aging process—resulting in this high-quality aged finish.
Lacquer was used as the finish, applied as thinly as possible.
Intense aging techniques were then layered on top to achieve this authentic, realistic texture.
Otherwise, it's entirely standard.
The result is a bass that achieves an unprecedented level of perfection as a vintage replica.
It's trebly yet has dense lows, offering a light playing feel while producing surprisingly loud sound from the speakers.
It's truly a magnificent piece.
I want to tell musicians worldwide that such basses can be made right here in Japan.
I sincerely hope Japanese players will be among the first to try it out in stores.
As an aside, I have memories connected to Carlos, the craftsman who applied this aged finish, who was my supervisor during my Fender days.
We had mutual acquaintances, and in 2019, he invited me to his home in California.
At that time, he wasn't yet a Master Builder, but he was working as a member of the Custom Shop, crafting incredible guitars.
So, having one of Carlos's apprentices join Sago feels like fate.
