Black Smoker is a Japanese handmade brand born from a musical instrument manufacturing site in Nagano Prefecture.
The instruments are manufactured by BLACK CLOUD.
The company is a collaboration between representative Mr. Kuroiwa, who has been involved in the design and manufacturing of numerous manufacturers and models, and young builder Mr. Yanagisawa.
Due to limited production numbers, opportunities to find both new and used Black Smoker instruments on the market are rare.
This particular instrument is a JB-style BETA-J4.
The color is 3TS (3 Tone Sunburst), and the combination with the tortoiseshell pickguard gives it a classic feel.
The body is made of alder, the neck is maple, and the fingerboard is Indian rosewood—a classic combination.
The fingerboard features binding and pearl dot position markers, giving it a truly authentic look.
The nut width is a relatively narrow 38.2mm.
The slim neck, typical of a JB, allows for smooth left-hand fingering.
The ferrule is visible on the back of the body, indicating a string-through construction.
This provides a firm string tension, resulting in a well-defined sound.
The guitar features two Black Smoker original single-coil pickups.
A key feature of this instrument is the mini-switch on the control plate, which allows you to switch the pickup wiring between series and parallel.
In parallel mode, it produces a classic JB sound with two volume controls, while in series mode, it delivers a thick, powerful output similar to a humbucker, greatly expanding the sonic range of this single guitar.
In series mode, the controls function as master volume and master tone.
Despite its simple passive circuitry, the ability to dramatically change the sound with a single switch is very reassuring.
