Description & Condition
Description & Condition
Michael Tobias Design (MTD) was founded in 1974 by Michael Tobias, who has made a living making musical instruments.
It is highly regarded by top bassists worldwide, including Andrew Gouche, Robert "Bubby" Lewis, and Jerry Watts. (Titles omitted)
Despite producing only about 10 instruments per month, its quality is widely known.
This is the flagship model, the 535-21.
This model number indicates a 5-string model with a 35-inch scale length and a 21-fret fingerboard.
The body top and back are made of maple burl, with a poplar koa.
The neck is maple, and the fingerboard is ebony.
The use of beautiful exotic woods gives it an attractive look characteristic of MTD.
The pickups and preamp are the familiar Bartolini custom pickups.
The EQ, in its flat setting, is massive, clear, and speedy.
Even with boosting, the sound doesn't break down; it becomes more solid and impactful, or sharper and more incisive—it's incredibly versatile.
Because it possesses a refined balance in its basic state, the sound doesn't break down even when actively manipulating the EQ, and even when adjusting the pickup balance, it maintains a powerful, bass-like sound.
The frets have approximately 80% remaining.
The truss rod is in good condition.
The neck is in good condition.
The body and paintwork show some minor scratches and small dents, but overall it's clean. There is a repaired crack near the 1st string tuner mounting screw on the back of the headstock.
The electronics are in good condition.
The 3rd string tuner has been replaced with a HIP SHOT tuner.
