Description & Condition
Mattisson Bass is a high-end bass brand based in Sweden.
Henrik Linder of Dirty Loops is known to have been using Mattisson basses since the brand's inception, starting with prototypes.
Builder Anders Mattisson actively incorporates modern designs, such as True Temperament, and his unique style is highly regarded by many musicians.
This is the HL-6, their most popular model.
While this brand offers various custom order options, this time we ordered a simple look to appreciate the design itself.
This model is indeed the one Henrik Linder uses.
The first thing that catches the eye is the seemingly irregular fretboard.
This is the True Temperament fret system.
It re-examines the traditional linear fret placement, rearranging the frets to consider string thickness, pressure applied to the strings, and string vibration, resulting in optimal pitch output.
This results in a level of pitch unattainable with conventional electric instruments.
This approach, which aims to eliminate imperfections as much as possible, is in some ways the complete opposite of a vintage style.
However, the beauty and charm of this instrument lie in its numerical aspects.
The well-organized harmonic richness felt the moment you play it, and the clear pitch even when playing chords, likely stem from this.
It might look difficult to play, but in reality, the feeling while playing is almost zero.
I was surprised myself, but it's a feeling I highly recommend experiencing.
Looking at the wood, the body is mahogany.
It's finished in an extremely thin matte black that allows the wood grain to show through.
The neck is a 3-piece construction of ash and maple, with a maple fingerboard.
Ash necks are somewhat rare, but they are frequently used in basses like the MTD and Capurso, and their advantages are widely recognized among bass enthusiasts.
The scale length is 33 inches, a slightly shorter scale, but there's absolutely no sense of poor pitch.
It gives the impression of having extracted only the supple playing feel of a shorter scale.
The neck joint can be chosen as either a through-neck or bolt-on, but this particular instrument uses a bolt-on.
This results in a sharper attack and a clearer sound.
In fact, Henrik Linder uses a bolt-on, maple-fretboard bass when he frequently employs slap techniques.
The tuning machines and bridge are Hipshot.
A global standard.
The pickups are EMG 45TW.
These can be switched between single-coil and dual-coil modes with a push/pull mechanism.
Furthermore, the finger ramp is cut to the size of the pickup, making it easy to add additional pickups.
The preamp is a Zuta Bass Core Preamp.
Equipped with a 3-band EQ, it features a remarkably clean sound.
The sound is tight, clear, yet organic.
The beauty of the well-defined harmonics and the unwavering bass pitch are like plucking the core strings of a grand piano.
Yet, it retains the characteristic thickness of a bass, which is its charm.
This balance of incorporating cutting-edge technology while maintaining its timeless value as a foundation is likely the reason for its high regard.
Please give it a try.
