The Stingray is the company's flagship model, but the subsequent Sabre is equally highly regarded.
This is a Music Man from before the company was acquired by Erni Ball, and models from before the acquisition are specially treated as Pre-Ernie.
This particular guitar was manufactured in 1979, making it one of the earliest.
The neck pocket is stamped SEP 4 1979.
The pot dates are 1377913, 1377918, and 1377919, respectively.
Based on these factors, we were able to determine the guitar's age.
The body is likely ash, with maple neck and fingerboard.
Its distinctive features include a three-point joint and a truss rod accessed from the headstock.
It is equipped with two original humbucking pickups.
Compared to the Stingray, which has only one pickup, it allows for a wider range of sound-making possibilities.
The preamp is the original two-band preamp.
Boosting the lows produces a punchier sound, while boosting the treble produces a more flashy, attacking sound.
Switches include a pickup select switch, phase switch, and treble boost switch.
Looking at these, you could say this is the predecessor to the G&L L-2000.
Compared to the Stingray, it produces a more flashy, crisp sound.
This is a sound that can only be obtained with this model, and it is very appealing.
This is one of those vintage basses that will likely become more appreciated in the future.
Approximately 60% of the frets remain.
The truss rod is in good condition.
The neck is in good condition.
The body and finish show signs of use, with dents and scratches. The pickguard has a crack that appears to have been caused by the screws being driven in. It's also missing a small section.
The electrical system is in good condition.
The battery snap and jack have been replaced.
The instrument has been refretted and the nut replaced accordingly.
The third-string tuning machine has been replaced. The pickguard has been replaced.
The original nut and the defective tuning machine are included.
