1965–66 Fender Jazz Bass in Olympic White: A Transition-Era Vintage Worth Knowing

A well-preserved 1965–1966 Jazz Bass has just landed in our inventory, and it's a genuinely interesting one — a transition-era instrument that carries the sharp, clear voice this model is famous for, with plenty of honest playing history behind it.

Fender: The Undisputed Icon of Bass

Fender needs little introduction. From Jaco Pastorius to Marcus Miller to Geddy Lee, the brand's instruments have shaped the sound of the bass guitar for over half a century.

The 1965–1966 Jazz Bass

The Jazz Bass was released as Fender's premium alternative to the Precision Bass, and its sharp, clear tone has kept it in high demand ever since. This particular example was built during the 1965–1966 window.

Neck date stamp reading 2 OCT 65 A

The neck date stamp reads "2 OCT 65 A," pointing to a 1965 build. The neck pickup volume pot's solder markings weren't fully legible but appear to indicate 1966, while the tone pot is stamped "137-6605," confirming 1966. Taking the full picture into account, we've dated this bass to 1965–1966. It also carries a genuinely transitional spec: a non-binding body paired with paddle-style tuning keys.

Wood & Finish

The body is Alder, finished in Olympic White. The finish has been refinished at some point in the bass's life — but since the headstock is color-matched, it's safe to assume the original finish was Olympic White as well. The refinish has a convincingly vintage-correct look and feel, with no jarring inconsistencies.

Olympic White refinish detail

The neck is Maple, paired with a round-laminated Rosewood fretboard — a construction method specific to this era. The round fretboard with pearloid dot inlays is a detail collectors look for specifically in basses from this window (we can't confirm whether the board is Brazilian rosewood).

The finish shows genuine, honest wear from years of playing — but the overall tone is cohesive, giving the whole instrument real character rather than a mismatched look.

Hardware

Original gray bobbin pickups

The pickups are the original gray-bobbin units. The bridge pickup's pot, capacitor, and a portion of the wiring have been replaced.

Original tuners and bridge

The tuning machines and bridge are both original to the instrument.

Condition

Fret condition showing approximately 90 percent life remaining

Roughly 90% fret life remains. Based on the fret condition, we believe the bass has had a professional refret and re-nut at some point — the work is clean and precise. The truss rod is in good working order, meaning this bass is ready for many more years of playing.

Included Accessories

Original period-correct hardshell case

The bass comes with its period-correct original hardshell case.

Sound Impression

True to a mid-1960s Jazz Bass, this instrument delivers a sharp, cutting tone. That edge coexists with a rich, harmonic-laden midrange — a combination that's uniquely characteristic of vintage Fender basses from this era.
