Ulrich Bass Design is a small handmade bass brand from Germany.
The builder Florian Hertzsch is also a violin maker.
The main characteristic of this brand is that it is a modern bass with a neat balance, while adopting widely cultivated classical techniques and Spanish guitar construction.
The Retro57 J is inspired by the tone of the classic JB, but finished in a modern style.
The body is a sandwich construction with a spruce core sandwiched between maple top and back.
The body is made of ultra-lightweight Honduran cedar.
This makes it sound like an acoustic guitar with a rich sound and very responsive to picking.
The headstock is very distinctive, and is based on the construction of Spanish guitars.
This style of Spanish guitar, perfected by Antonio de Torres in the 1800s, is what Ulrich Bass Design does best and is clearly superior, according to Florian. (We also heard that the currently popular headstock style has manufacturing advantages, but ......)
The pickups are Haeussel J bass set.
The strings vibrate softly and the pickups have a high performance.
The bridge and tuning keys are made by GOTOH.
The panel where the controls are located is fixed with a magnet and can be easily removed by hand.
It is more like a JB, but it is more raw and has a strong nuance of an acoustic bass with a piezo PU.
This lack of ornamentation and speed may make it difficult to play in some ways, but it more than makes up for it and makes the bass fun to play.
