About

Sago New Material Guitars was founded by Satoshi Takayama in Amagasaki, Hyogo, Japan. As a lifelong maker at heart, Takayama began repairing and modifying guitars using tools and materials passed down from a former craftsman — and never looked back. The brand name "Sago" comes from his childhood nickname, a reflection of the personal and handcrafted spirit behind every instrument. Since 2004, Sago has grown into one of Japan's most respected boutique guitar and bass builders, known for fully custom instruments built without compromise. Every detail — from body shape and wood selection to finish and hardware — is chosen by the player.

Pioneer of Thermo Wood in Instrument Making

Pioneer of Thermo Wood in Instrument Making

Sago was the first in the world to introduce thermo wood technology to guitar and bass manufacturing, back in 2009 — now widely known as "roasted" wood. Originally developed in Finland, the thermal treatment removes moisture and cellulose, dramatically stabilizing the wood against seasonal changes. Ideal for climates like Japan's, where temperature and humidity fluctuate year-round.

Japan's First Carbon Neck for Electric Instruments

Japan's First Carbon Neck for Electric Instruments

Sago developed Japan's first carbon fiber neck for electric guitar and bass. Through careful engineering of the carbon weave and neck structure, they've minimized the tonal gap between carbon and wood. Carbon necks maintain a perfectly set relief regardless of climate — and like a traditional neck, a truss rod is built in for fine adjustability.
