The 4001 is a higher-end model with pickups added to the 4000, the first model produced by the company, and is the predecessor of the 4003, which is currently positioned as the flagship model.
Many historic musicians such as Paul McCartney (Beatles), Chris Squier (Yes), and Cliff Burton (Metallica) used the 4001 and took the world by storm.

The design of the instrument, with its maple through-neck and maple wings, has given it a characteristic low frequency range.
However, it is not overly dark, and the Rickenbacker 4001's great appeal is that it has a slight comped feel and open nuance.
