J.W. Black is a former Fender master builder who continues to craft exquisite guitars and basses even after going independent.
He began his career in the '70s, working for Sadowsky, Rudy's, Fender, and others, as well as repairing vintage guitars as a freelancer (he worked on guitars for Frank Zappa and Eric Clapton, among others), before launching his own brand.
This model is based on his concept, but is manufactured in Japan to offer a cost-effective price.
J.W. Black never attempted to produce a 5-string JB under his own brand.
He once told me that his work there is based on Leo Fender.
Therefore, the J.W. Black brand 5-string bass would not have been possible without this Japanese-made series.
The body features an alder body and rosewood fingerboard, a classic construction.
It is notable for its modern elements while being modeled after a vintage-style bass.
The electrical system is well-equipped, with CTS potentiometers, Circle D capacitors, and cross-wiring.
The pickups are thought to be from the same Callahan brand as in the USA.
While based on a vintage-style bass motif, it also has modern elements, featuring a fat yet tight, clear sound.
While packed with many of the classic elements of a jazz bass, it has been finished with high playability and a hot sound that is perfect for modern musicians.
Approximately 95% of the frets remain.

All products sold by Basic Co., Ltd. are guaranteed against defects. The warranty period is three months for used items and one year for new items.
