This is the third tube effect pedal from Beyond, a brand founded by engineers from one of Japan's leading manufacturers!
Following the Booster and Buffer, the Preamp was developed.
There are three models in the Preamp lineup: one for guitar, one for acoustic guitar, and one for bass guitar, but this one is for bass guitar.
I (GIB Saga) was deeply involved in the development of this product, and we adopted a design best suited for the modern bass player.
As with the previous two models, just by passing it through the tube, the density of the low to mid frequency range is greatly increased, and a unique tube nuance such as a slight sense of compression and saturation can be obtained.
The controls are simple: Volume, Bass, Middle, and Treble.
The frequency range of the EQ is as follows.
Bass 65Hz
Middle 500Hz
Treble 4kHz
While many EQs set Bass at 40Hz, we chose 65Hz for this product.
With 40Hz, it is not uncommon for the sound to be too blurred or muffled when boosted.
In this respect, by setting the EQ at 65Hz, we eliminated the problems of 40Hz boosting and imagined an operational feel that controls only the presence of the bass and the push of the low frequency range.
Middle is at 500Hz, and I imagined adjusting the tightness of the bass sound.
Cutting it makes it clearer and boosting it makes it louder.
I believe that the 500Hz adjustment plays a very important role in controlling the bass's sense of loss.
Treble is at 4kHz, and we did not dare to cover the so-called presence band.
Instead, I adjusted it in the direction of widening the Q range more than Bass and Middle.
We imagined that the operation would be like adjusting the metallic nuance of the strings and the delicacy of the touch.
It is like adjusting the treble part of the component that is actually audible to the ear as pitch.
As typified by the aforementioned EQ, the amount of boost, the width of the Q, and the frequency band were repeatedly fine-tuned under a variety of conditions, and we adopted what we could say was most useful for bass.
Prioritizing sound over cost, an Electro Harmonix 12AU7EH vacuum tube was used.
Other electronic parts were selected with the highest priority on performance, without any cost-cutting that would impair functionality or lower quality.
Because I was involved in the development of this product, I recommend it with absolute confidence.
There are scratches, stains, and overall signs of use.
Operation is good.
